Stephanie Kilgast takes a very vibrant approach to her upcycling of everyday, materials and I think that’s really interesting because she provides us with an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of our environment.
She takes discarded plastic and glass objects like milk bottles and mason jars and creates these beautifully intricate environments on them- reminiscent of the tiny ecosystems all around us. There’s a solemn reality to her work as this is what our planet now looks like- organisms having to build their environments over our discarded items and expose themselves to chemicals. Stephanie’s work brings attention to this reality we have imposed on the other species we share the world with and I think that’s beautiful.
Her composition is also very intriguing. As I mentioned earlier, she uses very vibrant colours and the way she wraps her miniature clay sculptures around the items is very intimate.
