THE SPIRIT WRAPS AROUND ME | LIZ MCGOWAN

The Spirit Wraps Around me Liz McGowan .png

This series of work by environmentalist Liz McGowan is absolutely fascinating and one of my personal favourites. McGowan works in conversation with the Norfolk landscape and in this series, she explores wearing the landscape as a ‘skin’ There is a compelling sensuality about this piece of hers and it’s the embodiment of the original human experience. I’m reminded of how the first of our species would create their garments from elements of the environment, whereas now we manufacture and exploit those elements in a mass manner.

This collection is extremely innovative and I strongly feel should be explored more in our clothing endeavours. If we turned to environmentally friendly clothing outlets like these, we could eliminate the need for fast fashion.

The manner in which these pieces have been photographed should also be celebrated. There is a sense of intimacy and rawness in the way she stands and immerses herself into the same landscape she has utilised, as though becoming one with it.
